Company summary

Rio Tinto is one of the world's largest diversified mining groups, producing iron ore, aluminium, copper and other minerals. Its Pilbara iron-ore operations remain the largest earnings contributor, while copper and lithium are increasingly important to growth.

02

Key activities

Mining and processing iron ore, aluminium and bauxite, copper and other minerals, major project development, rail and port logistics and marketing of commodities worldwide.

03

Key markets

Global commodity markets, with China the most important customer for iron ore and substantial operations in Australia, North America, South America and Africa.

04

Key drivers

Iron ore, copper and aluminium prices, Chinese steel demand, production volumes, project execution, unit costs, exchange rates and growth in copper and lithium.

05

Key risks

Commodity-price falls, China slowdown, project cost overruns, operational disruptions, environmental and indigenous-rights issues, political risk and high capital expenditure.

06

Recent Developments

29 July 2026: first-half sales revenue rose 15% to $31.0bn, operating cash flow increased 32% to $9.2bn and free cash flow rose 75% to $3.8bn, supporting a 43% higher interim dividend. Investors should watch iron-ore demand, copper growth projects and capital discipline as the portfolio shifts gradually toward energy-transition materials.

07

Dividend notes

Rio Tinto generally targets an ordinary dividend payout of around 40-60% of underlying earnings. The 2026 interim dividend represents a 50% payout and totals about $3.4bn; the UK shares went ex-dividend on 14 August 2026, with payment due in September.
