Company summary

WHSmith is now primarily an international travel retailer operating shops in airports, railway stations and other transport locations. The group has shifted away from its traditional UK high-street business to focus on higher-growth travel markets.

02

Key activities

Travel convenience retail, books, news, food, drinks, health and travel accessories through airport and rail stores in the UK, North America and other international markets.

03

Key markets

Airports and railway stations in the UK, North America and international travel hubs, with performance closely linked to passenger numbers.

04

Key drivers

Passenger volumes, airport traffic, store openings, spend per passenger, travel disruption, product mix, concession wins, margins and debt reduction.

05

Key risks

Flight disruption, geopolitical events, weaker travel demand, airport concession costs, debt, accounting and governance issues, consumer weakness and execution risk.

06

Recent Developments

23 April 2026: the group cut FY2026 headline pre-tax profit guidance to £90m-£105m and suspended dividends as the Middle East conflict reduced air travel and passenger spending. This follows earlier accounting problems in North America and management changes, leaving debt reduction, governance and peak-summer travel trading crucial to the 2027 recovery case.

07

Dividend notes

WHSmith suspended its dividend in April 2026 to preserve cash and reduce debt. The previous final dividend had already gone ex-dividend in January and was paid in February, but no interim payout will be made while the balance sheet is being strengthened.
